Lincoln metropolitan area

Lincoln

The Malone neighborhood, the Black enclave the city calls T-Town, which the Malone Community Center has anchored against every round of freeway construction and university expansion since 1942.

Lincoln is the less-documented of the v1 cities. Urban-renewal scholarship has largely passed Lincoln by. The archival record, however, is growing. The Malone Community Center’s digitization project, funded by the Council on Library and Information Resources and the Andrew W. Mellon Foundation, will release approximately six thousand documents between 2024 and 2027. The Atlas treats the thinness of the existing record as part of the subject and builds its essay around the documents that do survive: the Lincoln Journal Star archive, the Nebraska State Historical Society collections, the Big Ten Academic Alliance Geoportal’s HOLC map, and the Malone Community Center’s own records.
